The 2025 Northampton elections did not yield a progressive council majority, and the Communist candidate for Ward 5 council fell 195 votes short. Still, we saw many important victories by our coalition, and the mayor came within 80 votes of defeat.
This campaign was a labor of collective love, in years of forging a broad labor-progressive unity which will only deepen in the coming months.
There is a hunger for something different in Northampton, as we see in the incredibly close mayoral results.
The Communist Party and allied progressive forces are here to stay. The struggle for a more democratic, open approach to governance and to meet the needs of workers, queer people, youth, seniors, and parents will intensify, and the working class will lead.
The business and nonprofit interests barely survived this round, and survival is not a mandate to govern. The majority cobbled together by the Democratic machine cannot hold amid its own contradictions, and we look forward to defeating it together in coming terms.
The valley is alight with progressive energy, and where we take one step back, we will take two more forward. This election was just the beginning; the struggle continues!
