9/2025 statement on H. Res. 719: “Honoring the Life of Charles ‘Charlie’ James Kirk”

On Friday, September 16, the U.S. House voted 215-95 to approve H.Res. 719: Honoring the Life of Charles James Kirk. With the exception of Ayanna Pressley and Seth Moulton, all Massachusetts House representatives, including Jim McGovern and Richard Neal, voted in favor of the resolution.

Kirk was an unapologetic propagandist for the mass stochastic and institutionalized violence being unleashed by the right onto our mostvulnerable community members. The right-wing outrage over his death is obviously not a response to tragedy, but a cynical attempt to promotetheir fascist ideology and deepen their ongoing assault on transgenderpeople and immigrants in particular, and to bring all democratic opposition to heel.

In Massachusetts we have seen an uptick in incursions from ICE. Our schools that are now lowering their flags to half-staff to recognize Kirk’s death are also reporting an alarming uptick in reactionary and transphobic rhetoric among youth. Thursday’s vigil on the Boston Common saw many Republicans journeying to the city from out of state. The MAGA movement understands Massachusetts as a bulwark against the rising tide of fascism, and it is inexcusable that our elected representatives have allowed for another front to be opened up against us.
